Alan Gray graduated from The University of Glasgow in 2000 with an MSci degree in Mathematics and Physics. He performed a Ph.D. at The University of Glasgow in Theoretical Particle Physics (in particular the area of Lattice QCD) between 2000 and 2003: his thesis was awarded the 2004 Ogden Prize for the best UK thesis in particle physics phenomenology. He furthered this work, which involved exploiting HPC to probe the Standard Model of Particle Physics through calculating theoretical physical properties of particles for comparison to experiment,  under a University Postdoctoral Fellowship award at The Ohio State University between 2003 and 2005.

Alan joined EPCC in 2005, and has since managed and performed technical work on a wide range of HPC projects.  Much of his work has revolved around the national HPC services HPCx and HECToR: he has had particular responsibility for optimisation of scientific applications at scale. Lately Alan has been involved with researching the use of GPUs/accelerators for scientific computing, with particular focus on the role they will play in future generations of supercomputers.

Alan currently sits on the EPCC MSc in HPC management board, the University of Edinburgh School of Physics and Astronomy Research Committee and is also actively involved in the OpenMP committee, in particular the subcommittee looking at extending the OpenMP directive language to support accelerators.
