I graduated in 1995 from the University of Edinburgh with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geophysics. After this, I moved south to Oxford where I undertook a D. Phil. in global seismology which I completed in 1999. My D.Phil. research involved the acquisition, processing, modelling, inversion and interpretation of seismic data resulting in the construction of three-dimensional models of the variations in shear velocity and attenuation within the Earth’s mantle.
On completion of my D. Phil. I undertook a short post-doc at Oxford University before moving back to Edinburgh. In November 1999 I joined the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University as a Research Associate working with the Edinburgh Time-Lapse Project. Some of the projects I worked on are listed below:
- 4D signal enhancement using singular value decomposition;
- Cross-equalisation and matching of time-lapse datasets;
- Attenuation (Q) measurements using VSP data;
- Acoustic impedance inversion of both streamer and seabed datasets;
- Investigating the vector fidelity of 4C-4D data collected from ocean bottom receivers (both P and S waves).
I joined EPCC in January 2004 as an Applications Consultant. I also teach on a number of modules for EPCC’s MSc in High Performance Computing.
In my spare time I can be found tearing down hills on a mountain bike, hillwalking or climbing and when the Scottish weather allows skiing/snowboarding.
