A team of students from EPCC's MSc programmes took part in this year's Student Cluster Competition at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Germany. The competition requires teams to design and configure a cluster on which they optimise and run benchmarks and applications within a power budget of 3000 watts.
Here Team EPCC and its coach Emmanouil Farsarakis tell us about their hard work and its rewards.

This year's ISC conference in Frankfurt was the best week for Women in HPC (WHPC) since our launch in 2014.
I spent a lot of my week personally talking about how I want to ‘make the world a better place’. It sounds very cliché but I believe it is a message that we in HPC need to embrace more if we are to encourage more women to move into HPC and something we all need to talk about more. As such as I was thrilled that during ISC, WHPC participated in activities across the full extent of the conference and spoke to a record number of attendees about the importance and benefits of creating an inclusive and diverse workforce. This was WHPC’s own little contribution to changing the world!

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provide free web-based distance learning opportunities to large numbers of geographically dispersed students. Here at EPCC we are always keen to talk about supercomputing, and becoming involved in this MOOC was a natural development for us.

As part of our MSc Programmes, EPCC organises a yearly series of guest lectures given by external speakers from industry and academia.

The Student Cluster Competition is held three times a year, at Supercomputing, ISC High Performance and the Asia Student Supercomputing Challenge. EPCC has taken part in the past with great success and we're returning to the competition at ISC17 with a strong team of students from our MSc in High Performance Computing, and MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science.

Wee Archie: a wee bit of history
Some time ago (actually 2015), EPCC built a Raspberry Pi cluster called Wee Archie to demonstrate some of the principles behind a full-sized supercomputer. We designed the cluster to be portable as we can't carry around a real supercomputer and just looking at a laptop "connected" to some remote system isn't that engaging.

In a previous blog post I talked about ePython, the very lightweight version of Python that I have developed for the Epiphany co-processor. This co-processor is combined with a dual core ARM CPU on the Parallella single board computer, and this week an updated OS image was released for the machine which now includes ePython pre-installed.
