My work experience at EPCC
Author: Guest bloggerPosted: 21 Nov 2016 | 09:59
Connor Walsh is a school pupil who joined us on a work experience placement last week. Here's his report.
I have been "working" at the EPCC offices at Edinburgh University under Eilidh Troup on a project using Python and Pygame to simulate how much an object would sink in water when you change the mass and the volume of the object.

It has been around two years since a number of us at EPCC became science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) ambassadors and, as part of our outreach activities, we have maintained our membership of STEMNET (you have to do at least one STEM-related event per year).

CP2K-UK still going strong

September seems to have passed by in a bit of a blur, and it's already a whole month since the CP2K Summer School, which we ran at King's College London (23-26th August), so I thought it would be a good time to give an update on the recent activities of the CP2K-UK project.
Summer of HPC comes to an end

This week we said goodbye to our Summer of HPC students Anna, Marta and Tomislav.
These students from around Europe have spent the last 7 weeks with us at EPCC immersed in HPC, and each working on a specific project in the field. This is a great because not only do they gain experience and interest in HPC but we also get a useful, tangible, outcome from these projects.
Can one of our MSc students help you?

We're looking for collaborative projects with industry and academia.
A new batch of students will soon be joining our MSc in High Performance Computing (HPC) and MSc in HPC with Data Science.
As ever we are on the look-out for interesting collaborative projects for the students to undertake towards the end of their course (roughly from April/May to August).
Data and Software Carpentry combo at Edinburgh

With my Software Sustainability Institute hat on, I recently participated in a back-to-back Data Carpentry and Software Carpentry course sponsored by the University's Research Data Service here at the University of Edinburgh. The courses were held in the main University library in a gorgeous room with a glass wall, providing a rather distracting view of the Meadows parkland.
