For the fourth year running, from Wednesday 13th March to Saturday 16th of March,  EPCC will be attending the Big Bang Fair (BBF) at the NEC in Birmigham to demonstrate the wonders of supercomputing. The BBF encourages young people to adopt STEM-based subjects at school and later as a career – not only through universities but also apprenticeships and other career choices. This is also a great opportunity for our colleagues to undertake some outreach.

For the third year running a group of us from EPCC attended the Big Bang Fair (BBF) at the NEC in Birmingham through the ARCHER Outreach programme. BBF provides an excellent opportunity to show a wide range of young people what supercomputing is about and encourage them to adopt careers in STEM-based subjects.

We are writing our activities up to encourage others to try doing supercomputing outreach and show that you do not need fancy equipment. For more information see the ARCHER's Ambassador pack or GitHub where we develop these. We enourage you to feedback or collaborate with us.

Yesterday was Day Three of the Big Bang Fair, and it has kept delivering all the time.

One of the most interesting things for me has been comparing this year to last year. For example, one of our most popular activities from last year, the supercomputing app, has been much quieter this year - but the beanbag sorting game has been a huge hit!

The Big Bang Fair, billed as the UK's largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people, provides our Supercomputing Sleuths event with an excellent opportunity to show the benefits of supercomputing to a host of young people through a number of targeted acitivities.

During my period as a PhD student, I dealt with questions from academics, ranging from university students to full professors. However today at the Big Bang Fair (BBF) it was slightly different. This time the questions regarding what supercomputing is and what it involves came from pupils from different UK schools.

Day five of the Big Bang Fair, our busiest day yet and Mario left us to return back to Edinburgh. The previous evening we all attended the supporter’s dinner, where the Young Scientist and Young Engineer of the year were announced. It was followed by a three course sit down dinner with people from industry, the exhibitors and other guests.
