On the 10th of April Lorna Smith, Toni Collis and I spent the morning at Tweedbank Community Centre with a group of 30 pre-school children from the local nursery and playgroup - possibly the youngest group of potential HPC users we have met yet! As part of the Borders Science Festival, we had offered to run a workshop giving an overview of HPC, kick-start an interest in STEM, and help cover one of their Curriculum for Excellence outcomes: "I can talk about science stories to develop my understanding of the world around me".

A visit to the museum is often filled with wonders about the past, other cultures, science and art. For five days in April, a visit to the National Museum of Scotland included an introduction to supercomputers. As part of the University of Edinburgh's programme of family events, EPCC staff and university students were there with a drop-in exhibit: "What Makes Supercomputers Super?". The exhibit had activities which the public, young and old, could interact with and gain insight into how supercomputers support the science being researched at the University of Edinburgh, building on the history displayed by the museum.

This summer we were fortunate to have a student, Antoine, work on our dinosaur-racing outreach project as part of the Summer of HPC programme. Antoine did a great job in turning the demo from a simple prototype into a much more polished, usable showcase for how HPC plays a vital role in a variety of sciences. If you are a regular reader of the EPCC blog then you might have already read some posts about this application - see my initial blog post, and Antoine's progress updates here and here.

What do dinosaurs, prime numbers, four individuals from EPCC and Cray, and the city of Newcastle have in common? Not much until the four descended on Newcastle to take part in the British Science Festival 2013 with demonstrations about virtual dinosaurs and a talk about prime numbers.
After some early morning travel down the east coast of the UK from Edinburgh to Newcastle, the four - Iain (the intrepid prime number man), Nick (keeper of the virtual dinosaurs), Tom (the man from Cray) and myself - set up a room in the Discovery Museum in quick time. The Learning Room, as it was called, was next to the Museum Archives where, if you looked closely in one of the cabinets, you could see a first-generation iPad.

In a previous post, I presented my project on making a dinosaur racing competition. In that post, I gave some background information about virtual palaeontology, and the purpose of my project here in Edinburgh. If you haven’t read it yet, now might be a good time to do so!
So, now that the project (and the summer) is almost finished, let us see what has happened in these past two months – and what you will soon be able to enjoy!

Is a dinosaur faster if it has longer legs? Is it better for it to be bigger, and hence cover more distance, or to be smaller and lighter? Which species is the fastest? Thanks to high-performance computing, you will soon be able to experiment yourself, and try and find answers to all those questions!

The Animal Simulation project, run at the University of Manchester, aims to create realistic simulations of animals both present and extinct. By combining the expertise of a number of scientific fields along with high performance computing (HPC), they have created GaitSym, a code capable of realistically simulating movements of animals based on a 3D model of their skeleton and biological data.
