Frequent readers of our blog may have twigged that this is another article about our outreach efforts at EPCC. A few weeks ago we were in Birmingham for the Big Bang Fair 2018 (one of the largest science events  for schools held in the UK) and at the beginning of April, EPCC was once again part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

EPCC will be at the Edinburgh International Science Festival again along with others from the University of Edinburgh. Last year we hosted a very successful Junkyard Clusters workshop where participants constructed a PC from its constituent components. This year we will be part of the drop-in activities, showing what supercomputers can do

It was not without a certain element of trepidation that I volunteered to help out at our offering at this year's Edinburgh International Science Festival: Junkyard Clusters.

The activity basically involved taking a stripped down Dell desktop system and, in a workshop format, with a host of mostly young participants, walking them through putting the machine back together, networking the systems up and from the now working systems getting them to collaboratively build a fractal image.

At 12pm and 2pm from Saturday 26th of March to Wednesday 30th March  EPCC, as part of the University of Edinburgh offering, will be running a free but ticketed event, entitled Junkyard Clusters, at the Edinburgh International Science Festival. This will let you to put a personal computer (PC) together from its various components and, once done, cluster the PC with those built by fellow workshop attendees to solve a common problem. This is a great opportunity to see what some of the innards of a computer look like, how they fit together and what they do. Tickets are limited so make sure that you get yours early!

Yesterday I spent the day volunteering at the Careers Hive a new activity organised by Edinburgh International Science Festival for S1-S3 pupils.  The event is running in the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland from 29th February to 4th March 2016.
