This week ISC, one of the largest conferences in the supercomputing calendar, should have been running in Frankfurt. It’s a funny feeling because, as I type, I realise that if it wasn’t for COVID-19 then, instead of being stuck at home, I would have been busy navigating the Messe Frankfurt, going from one session to another.

TeamEPCC will participate in the ISC19 Student Cluster Competition on 17–19 June in Frankfurt, Germany. Please come to visit us at Booth A-1452.
TeamEPCC undertook a special two-day training in May provided by our team’s sponsor Boston Ltd to further prepare for the ISC19 Student Cluster Competition (SCC). During the training, the team had plenty of opportunities to assemble the hardware and experiment with multiple system softwares.

Spyros Nita is an MSc student on our High Performance Computing with Data Science programme. He tells us about TeamEPCC, which will be competing in the Student Cluster Competition at ISC High Performance 2018.
Summer is on its way, and with it the annual International Supercomputing Conference (ISC). One of the three most important annual HPC events in the world, ISC focuses on the development of HPC, its scientific applications and its adoption into commercial environments. An important part of this event is the Student Cluster Competition (SCC), where teams representing twelve international universities meet to compete with each other. The University of Edinburgh is represented by TeamEPCC, four students currently enrolled in the MSc in High Performance Computing or MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science.

A team of students from EPCC's MSc programmes took part in this year's Student Cluster Competition at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Germany. The competition requires teams to design and configure a cluster on which they optimise and run benchmarks and applications within a power budget of 3000 watts.
Here Team EPCC and its coach Emmanouil Farsarakis tell us about their hard work and its rewards.

This year's ISC conference in Frankfurt was the best week for Women in HPC (WHPC) since our launch in 2014.
I spent a lot of my week personally talking about how I want to ‘make the world a better place’. It sounds very cliché but I believe it is a message that we in HPC need to embrace more if we are to encourage more women to move into HPC and something we all need to talk about more. As such as I was thrilled that during ISC, WHPC participated in activities across the full extent of the conference and spoke to a record number of attendees about the importance and benefits of creating an inclusive and diverse workforce. This was WHPC’s own little contribution to changing the world!

The Student Cluster Competition is held three times a year, at Supercomputing, ISC High Performance and the Asia Student Supercomputing Challenge. EPCC has taken part in the past with great success and we're returning to the competition at ISC17 with a strong team of students from our MSc in High Performance Computing, and MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science.
