The class of 2019 was the eighteenth cohort of EPCC MSc students and the first to be based at the Bayes Centre home. Our new surroundings have been immensely beneficial to the student experience, with the student desk space quite literally on the doorstep of staff offices and plenty of space to breakout for group study. Despite 2018/19 being our largest MSc intake in terms of entrants to that point, it was an incredibly cohesive group.

EPCC offers two MSc degree programmes: The MSc in High Performance Computing and the MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science. Both programmes offer flexibility with a rich choice of units and excellent job prospects on graduation.
2018/19 has seen the MSc in High Performance Computing/High Performance Computing with Data Science’s largest ever entry, with 36 students beginning the programmes last September, and it has been an extremely busy year for students and staff alike.

In the international ISC Student Cluster Competition (SCC), student teams build small clusters of different architectures to achieve the highest performance by running a series of applications and benchmarks under 3kW peak power limitation. The competition will be held in June in Frankfurt (Germany) as an integral part of the ISC High Performance Conference and Exhibition, and TeamEPCC will be there.

Spyros Nita is an MSc student on our High Performance Computing with Data Science programme. He tells us about TeamEPCC, which will be competing in the Student Cluster Competition at ISC High Performance 2018.
Summer is on its way, and with it the annual International Supercomputing Conference (ISC). One of the three most important annual HPC events in the world, ISC focuses on the development of HPC, its scientific applications and its adoption into commercial environments. An important part of this event is the Student Cluster Competition (SCC), where teams representing twelve international universities meet to compete with each other. The University of Edinburgh is represented by TeamEPCC, four students currently enrolled in the MSc in High Performance Computing or MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science.

The closing date for our Highly Skilled Workforce scholarships, open to Scottish and EU students, has been extended to May 28th. Scholarship applications should be made after completion of an MSc application. See https://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate/applying/.
We also have a scholarship for the MSc in HPC with Data Science programme that is provided by the Registers of Scotland. The closing date is May 21st - see https://www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/postgraduate/uk-eu/science-engineering/informatics/registers-of-scotland
Both the above have nationality restrictions - our own John Fisher scholarships are open to all. See https://www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/postgraduate/uk-eu/science-engineering/informatics/masters-hpc
You can see details of both HPC Masters courses at the Computing and Informatics web page.

This is a very exciting time for the MSc in HPC programmes. Our current students are halfway through their second semester of courses and are already starting work on developing their dissertation projects, while EPCC staff are looking forward to our summer move into the new Bayes Building. Located in the University's central area, this move will strengthen our existing collaborations with the School of Informatics.

As a large part of our MSc cohort comprises students from outside the UK, and with the HPC-Europa3 programme currently bringing in researchers from mainland Europe, I thought it would be nice to invite our visitors to experience some traditional Scottish culture: a ceilidh.

We're looking for collaborative projects with industry and academia.
As ever we are on the look-out for interesting collaborative projects for the students to undertake towards the end of their course (roughly from April/May to August).
