Earlier this year, HPE announced the Catalyst UK programme: a collaboration with Arm, SUSE and three UK universities to deploy one of the largest Arm-based high performance computing (HPC) installations in the world. EPCC was chosen as the site for one of these systems; the other two are the Universities of Bristol and Leicester.
EPCC's system (called 'Fulhame' after pioneering chemist Elizabeth Fulhame) was delivered and installed in early December. This HPE Apollo 70-based system consists of 64 compute nodes with two 32-core Cavium ThunderX2 processors (ie 4096 cores in total), 128GB of memory composed of 16 DDR4 DIMMs, and Mellanox InfiniBand interconnects. It will be made available to both industry and academia, with the aim to build applications that drive economic growth and productivity as outlined in the UK government’s Industrial Strategy.

A consortium led by Rolls-Royce and EPCC was recently awarded an EPSRC Prosperity Partnership worth £14.7m to develop the next generation of engineering simulation and modelling techniques, with the aim of developing the world’s first high-fidelity simulation of a complete gas-turbine engine during operation.

After a couple of years of measuring and trying to understand the power and energy consumption of (parallel) software and hardware, we have now released one of the key tools that we've been using as part of this research: the Adept Benchmark Suite!
While measuring performance (ie time to solution) is well understood, doing the same for power or energy is much less straightforward and often hardware dependent. The Adept Benchmark Suite relies on third party power measurement (such as instrumentation of the hardware) to be in place. However, to get users started with initial experiments, we provide a library to use RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) counters on Intel processors to measure the power of CPUs and memory, as well as some example code on how to use this library within the Adept Benchmarks.

The Adept project is addressing the challenge of the energy-efficient use of parallel technologies. It builds on the expertise of software developers from high-performance computing to exploit parallelism for performance, and on the expertise of Embedded systems engineers in managing energy usage. Adept is developing a tool to guide software developers and help them model and predict the power consumption and performance of parallel software and hardware.

Adept, EPCC’s latest EU project, started officially on the 1st September and we held our kick-off meeting in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. The project partners travelled from Sweden (Uppsala University and Ericsson) and Belgium (Ghent), as well as from just across town (Alpha Data) to take part.
