Yesterday was Day Three of the Big Bang Fair, and it has kept delivering all the time.
One of the most interesting things for me has been comparing this year to last year. For example, one of our most popular activities from last year, the supercomputing app, has been much quieter this year - but the beanbag sorting game has been a huge hit!

We are only two months away from 2017’s Big Bang Fair. We’ll be attending again this year, planning to wow kids of all ages with a hands-on look into the world of supercomputing.
The Big Bang Fair is a four-day intensive science festival held at the NEC in Birmingham. Now in its ninth year, it invites schoolchildren and families from all over the UK to attend and learn more about science and engineering. It particularly focuses on children aged 11-14, and hopes to use its wide variety of experiences, along with extensive careers events, to encourage children to consider careers in STEM fields.

The ADEPT project is creating tools that can be used to design more efficient HPC systems.
Energy efficiency is one of the key challenges of modern computing – in an era where even the most efficient supercomputers come with massive energy bills, technology that can help to increase energy efficiency is critical to sustainable HPC development.

It's a good time to take stock of our achievements and reflect on how to focus our efforts in the final phase. Also to consider life after the project ends: how do we want to exploit the technologies we have developed and the knowledge we have gained? How do we ensure a lasting legacy for Adept?

The NEXTGenIO project represents a step along the Exascale pathway.
We are developing a prototype platform that utilises the latest developments in memory technology, and that will offer vastly improved I/O performance compared to current HPC machines. The system will be developed end-to-end by the project partners – from inception through to delivery, with a full suite of systemware that can make use of the new technologies.

If you’ve been following our blog up to this point, you’ll know that today was the opening day of the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham. Our exploits in getting here and setting up the booth at the fair were chronicled in our Day 1 and Day 2 blogs, but today was a big one too.

Next month, a group of EPCC staff members will be travelling to Birmingham to take part in The Big Bang Fair 2016, a national science festival for school children. The event takes place over four days and will reportedly attract in excess of 70,000 visitors, so this is a great opportunity to showcase ARCHER, EPCC and all of the work we do here.
