Speeding up Python on ARCHER

45 minutes is a long time for a computer: 2,700 long seconds. For a supercomputer like ARCHER that's a lot of time to spend getting ready to do work, but this is the problem faced by the firedrake team who we work with as part of the Marine Technology project.

As in many previous years, EPCC once again participated in the University's Sustainability Awards this year.
For the first time in about 4 years, I was here (and not in Sweden) for the awards ceremony, so I managed to go along to pick up our award. I am told the wood is from an old church pew.

Today is the last day of the exhibition at SC13 so whilst I'm manning the booth (#3932) I thought I'd talk about some of the sessions I've been to and people I've met since my last post.
Energy efficient supercomputing

Today I attended the "First International Workshop on Energy Efficient Supercomputing (E2SC)"
It was really interesting (and confidence boosting) to find that what we are trying to do in the Adept project is similar in approach to that done by other research labs. The talks could be divided into two categories: modelling the effect of system parameters (such as cache) on energy and performance efficiency; and methods for measuring energy consumption.

Last Thursday (25th April) saw the prizegiving for the University Sustainability Awards. We've been involved with the awards for a few years now and have seen them change and adapt as we have. Last year EPCC won a Silver and this year we have achieved the top award, Gold.
