EPCC-led projects win 3 HPCwire awards at SC'15

19 November 2015

EPCC is proud to be associated with 3 HPCwire awards:

  • Fortissimo: Readers' Choice Award and Editors' Choice Award for Best Use of HPC in the Cloud
  • Women in HPC: Readers’ Choice Award for Leadership in Workforce Diversity

These annual awards recognise the best and the brightest developments in HPC during the preceding 12 months. They are nominated and voted on by the global HPC community, and are presented during the annual Supercomputing Conference.

The Readers' Choice Workforce Diversity Leadership Award was won by the Women in HPC network (WHPC). The network was set up to encourage women to join the HPC community by providing fellowship, support and education for individuals and for HPC employers. The network is coordinated by Dr Toni Collis of EPCC, and has become a major force for equality and diversity within the industry.

“We are very honoured to receive this recognition from our peers within the HPC community and the editors of HPCwire. We started this organisation to bring awareness to the lack of diversity in the technical fields in the UK. We are thrilled that we are receiving international recognition for our efforts.” Alison Kennedy, Women In HPC Executive Director and EPCC Executive Director

The Fortissimo project won both the Editors' and the Readers' Choice for Best Use of HPC in the Cloud. Fortissimo, jointly managed by EPCC and scapos AG, is a collaborative project that enables European SMEs to be more competitive globally through the use of simulation services running on a high performance computing cloud infrastructure. There are over 100 partners in the project, and over 50 experiments in which businesses are evaluating cloud-based HPC for carrying out modelling and simulation.

“These awards are ultimately given to the organisations that are making the greatest impact in advancing technology and humanity itself through high performance computing. The HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards send a strong message of support and appreciation from those in the global HPC community. We are proud to be able to recognise these efforts each year and our congratulations go out to all the winners.” Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications and publisher of HPCwire
