FLACS HPC service: explosion modelling for industry

10 December 2015

A partnership between EPCC and GexCon AS has created a unique explosion-modelling service for the petrochemical, nuclear, and general process-manufacturing industries.

FLACS is a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code for modelling explosions and atmospheric dispersion. Industry safety engineers normally run FLACS on a local workstation to support a risk assessment programme. However, GexCon’s FLACS software is hosted on EPCC’s High Performance Compute (HPC) infrastructures, so substantially reducing the time usually required to complete an assessment.

GexCon’s service is offered on a simple pay-per-use basis. This allows its customers to reap the benefits of HPC without costly capital investment because EPCC takes care of hosting, maintaining and supporting the HPC and data infrastructures. Pricing for the service is simple and straightforward: customers pay only for what they use through a one-stop-shop service fronted by GexCon. Support, access bandwidth, and data storage are all provided at no extra charge. And there’s no annual subscription fee.

EPCC’s position as Europe’s premier supercomputing centre was a major factor in GexCon’s choice of partner. Since our inception in 1990, we have gained an enviable reputation for leading-edge capability in all aspects of HPC, Big Data and novel computing. Our facilities are backed up by an exceptional pool of talent with over 80 highly qualified permanent staff who can provide assistance and support on virtually any aspect of HPC.
