Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre

The Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre, based at the University of Edinburgh, provides a high-quality research environment for investigations into the causes and treatment of dementia. One research strand explores possible geographical and environmental factors in the incidences of dementia in Scotland, using the Scottish Mental Surveys 1932 and 1947 . Careful anonymisation and linkage of these “gold standard” datasets is performed within the Farr Safe Haven, and subsequent geo-statistical analyses can take a week to run. EPCC software engineers have worked with the Alzheimer Scotland group to design ways to stabilise, modernize and accelerate the software, and EPCC data scientists have explored alternative statistical approaches which could cut analysis times down to hours rather than days.
