Golden Crumb: HPC for food production

Golden Crumb, a Scottish SME, manufacture a range of coated vegetable appetisers and starters for the food service sector.

Customers include many of the UK's major restaurants, hotels and catering groups. EPCC worked with Golden Crumb to assess the feasibility of a machine vision system for grading mushrooms. One of Golden Crumb's most popular products is breaded mushrooms. Their clients require mushrooms of an exact size for cooking and freezing. A system to detect outsized mushrooms before processing would lower the cost of production by reducing the processing of unwanted mushrooms and lessening the wastage of coating. Also rejected mushrooms could be used for other products if detected earlier.

Funded under the CALEDONIA initiative, the feasibility study successfully demonstrated that machine vision would bring considerable business benefits to the business.
