Sun Data and Compute Grids

This project was a collaborative work between EPCC and Sun Microsystems funded by the UK’s DTI/EPSRC e-Science Core Program, through the UK’s National e-Science Centre (NeSC).

The project developed an industry-strength fully Globus-enabled compute and data scheduler based around Grid Engine, Globus and a variety of data technologies.

The final products—TOG (Transfer queue Over Globus) and JOSH (JOb Scheduling Hierarchically)—provide users with coherent and co-ordinated access to compute and data resources both within and across organisations. This was achieved by developing a Hierarchical Scheduler which allows jobs and their associated data to be passed onto a Grid Engine. A middleware based on Globus handles the communications and data transfer between the Hierarchical Scheduler and Grid Engine.
