Most HPC-Europa2 visitors are hosted in research groups at one of the universities in Edinburgh (Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt or Napier). Accommodation is provided free of charge in a single bedroom with shared kitchen/living area in a five-bedroom house, sharing with other HPC-Europa2 visitors.
Visitors applying to host departments outside Edinburgh should note that we have a restricted budget for accommodation and can only contribute a maximum of 15 pounds per day towards accommodation. However, in most places this is usually more or less sufficient to cover the cost of accommodation equivalent to what we offer in Edinburgh, ie a room in a shared flat in university accommodation.
We usually ask visitors going to host departments far from Edinburgh (eg London, Cambridge, Oxford) to come to Edinburgh for 1-2 weeks at the start of their visit, to discuss their project with their EPCC technical contact and become familiar with the HPC systems. Accommodation is provided free of charge in the HPC-Europa2 house while the visitor is in Edinburgh.
For host departments within a short journey from Edinburgh (for example in Glasgow, St Andrews or Dundee), visitors may either:
- take a room in the HPC-Europa2 house in Edinburgh, sharing with other visitors, and travel once or twice a week to their host department, or
- look for similar accommodation near the host institute, with a suggested weekly visit to EPCC.
In either case, HPC-Europa2 would refund the train or bus fare between Edinburgh and the host department.
Most visitors opt to live in Edinburgh, where they will be integrated with the other visitors; however, some do choose to live near their host institution. We usually recommend that the visitor and host discuss how closely they want to collaborate, and how easy it would be to find suitable accommodation there.
