Professor Peter Boyle introduces the new DiRAC system, which is hosted at EPCC's Advanced Computing Facility.
DiRAC is part of the UK Government’s investment into the UK’s e-infrastructure to improve computing, software development, data storage, networking and distributed computing networks.
A 20th anniversary reunion at EPCC
Author: Mario AntoniolettiPosted: 28 Jul 2018 | 15:12
From 1987 until 2001 EPCC ran a Summer Scholarship Programme (SSP), which provided funding for undergraduate students from all over the world to come to EPCC for a ten-week period. General high performance computing (HPC) training was provided during the first week with the remaining nine weeks spent on an HPC-related project and writing a summary project of what was achieved. There was great competition for places, resulting in an extremely high standard of students taking part. This summer the 1998 SSP contingent decided to reunite, 20 years after they first came to Edinburgh as SSPers.
Machine learning for oil & gas exploration
Author: Nick BrownPosted: 27 Jul 2018 | 15:25
We are working on a machine-learning project with Rock Solid Images (RSI), a geoscience consulting firm that provides borehole characterisation with the goal of reducing exploration drilling risk for oil and gas companies.
RSI is one of the main players in the interpretation of seismic data with well log data and it has built its business on using advanced rock physics methods combined with sophisticated geologic models to deliver highly reliable predictions of where oil and gas might be found.
PRACE Summer of HPC brings the summer to Edinburgh
Author: Ben MorsePosted: 27 Jul 2018 | 09:18
The PRACE Summer of HPC 2018 provides an opportunity for up to 23 applicants from across Europe to apply to one of the PRACE supercomputing centres to work on a PRACE-related piece of work for eight weeks over the summer.
The projects are preceded by a training week, hosted this year by EPCC in Edinburgh alongside ARCHER and PRACE Advanced Training Centre courses. The training week is designed to build a community between the Summer of HPC participants and to provide the necessary skills for students to begin their projects. Flights and accommodation are provided by the programme with a stipend to cover living costs.
Software Deposit and Preservation Workshop
Author: Mike JacksonPosted: 24 Jul 2018 | 16:50
On the 11th July, the Software Sustainability Institute and Jisc ran a Software Deposit and Preservation Workshop at St Anne's College, Oxford. This workshop brought together twelve research data managers, digital repository vendors, publishers, policymakers and researchers. We reviewed draft guidance on software deposit and preservation, discussed software deposit and preservation from the perspectives of the foregoing stakeholders, and explored ways in which to drive forward the adoption of best practices in software deposit and preservation.
