As we continue to scale our HPC systems, the energy cost of doing so becomes an increasingly large and potentially limiting factor.
One of the most important aspects of addressing the challenges of energy efficient computing is having a solid understanding of how various design choices, in both software and hardware, affect the overall energy usage of your system and application.
In his guest post, PhD student Blair Archibald discusses how the Adept project is contributing to knowledge in this area.

The ADEPT project is creating tools that can be used to design more efficient HPC systems.
Energy efficiency is one of the key challenges of modern computing – in an era where even the most efficient supercomputers come with massive energy bills, technology that can help to increase energy efficiency is critical to sustainable HPC development.

It's a good time to take stock of our achievements and reflect on how to focus our efforts in the final phase. Also to consider life after the project ends: how do we want to exploit the technologies we have developed and the knowledge we have gained? How do we ensure a lasting legacy for Adept?

After a couple of years of measuring and trying to understand the power and energy consumption of (parallel) software and hardware, we have now released one of the key tools that we've been using as part of this research: the Adept Benchmark Suite!
While measuring performance (ie time to solution) is well understood, doing the same for power or energy is much less straightforward and often hardware dependent. The Adept Benchmark Suite relies on third party power measurement (such as instrumentation of the hardware) to be in place. However, to get users started with initial experiments, we provide a library to use RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) counters on Intel processors to measure the power of CPUs and memory, as well as some example code on how to use this library within the Adept Benchmarks.

The Adept project is addressing the challenge of the energy-efficient use of parallel technologies. It builds on the expertise of software developers from high-performance computing to exploit parallelism for performance, and on the expertise of Embedded systems engineers in managing energy usage. Adept is developing a tool to guide software developers and help them model and predict the power consumption and performance of parallel software and hardware.

Explorathon (also known as European Researcher’s Night Scotland) was a one-day public outreach event showing some of the work funded by the European Commission in Scotland.
EPCC staff working on European projects Adept and CRESTA joined other researchers from Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh universities in explaining their research to 700 people at Dynamic Earth here in Edinburgh.

This summer we have two students who have joined us for 9 weeks as part of the Summer of HPC programme. It is a great idea; in working on an HPC project not only do the students gain experience and enthusiasm for the field but also the actual work done on the projects is useful and important too.

EPCC will be exhibiting in Booth 920.
International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) is one of the main events in the field of high performance computing, networking and storage. It has a diverse programme of keynote talks, research presentations, tutorials, BoFs and satellite events provided by 300 expert speakers along with over 170 exhibitors and 3,000 attendees. As usual, there will be a significant EPCC representation.

Today I attended the "First International Workshop on Energy Efficient Supercomputing (E2SC)"
It was really interesting (and confidence boosting) to find that what we are trying to do in the Adept project is similar in approach to that done by other research labs. The talks could be divided into two categories: modelling the effect of system parameters (such as cache) on energy and performance efficiency; and methods for measuring energy consumption.

Adept, EPCC’s latest EU project, started officially on the 1st September and we held our kick-off meeting in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. The project partners travelled from Sweden (Uppsala University and Ericsson) and Belgium (Ghent), as well as from just across town (Alpha Data) to take part.
