EPCC helped lead the way in creating the standardised Message-Passing Interface (MPI) programming system to enable faster, more powerful, problem solving using parallel computing. It is now the ubiquitous de-facto standard among both hardware and software vendors.

The Auditory Project – an investigation into modelling the human ear using HPC

The Auditory pilot project investigated the use of HPC to enable faster run times for computational models of the human cochlea. It was a collaboration between EPCC and Dr Michael Newton of the University of Edinburgh’s Acoustics and Audio group.

We began with an existing cochlea model code written in Matlab, which took many hours to run on a single processor. Our initial profiling of the Matlab code showed that almost the entire runtime (see Figure 1) was taken up by this solver and thus any attempts to parallelise the code would require a C/C++ replacement to be found.

Last month, EPCC took part in the Bang Goes The Borders science festival at St Mary's Primary School in Melrose.  Lorna Smith, Justs Zarins and I spent the day telling people from pre-schoolers to retirees all about supercomputers, how they work, and what they are used for.

As well as helping out with our drop-in workshop at the British Science Festival in early September, I also had the chance to give a talk as part of the Festival's public lecture programme. Over 75 people turned out early on Sunday morning to hear 'Seventeen or Bust: Solving hard mathematical problems with your help!', where I explained how the PrimeGrid project is working on a solution to Sierpinski's conjecture, a fifty-year-old unsolved problem in Number Theory, as well as finding record-sized prime numbers in the process.

The Fortissimo project, which is coordinated here at EPCC, gives companies a low-risk opportunity to try out HPC. By combining it with cloud computing, they can gain the benefits without buying and running their own systems. Here are three examples of HPC in action under Fortissimo.

On the 10th of April Lorna Smith, Toni Collis and I spent the morning at Tweedbank Community Centre with a group of 30 pre-school children from the local nursery and playgroup - possibly the youngest group of potential HPC users we have met yet!  As part of the Borders Science Festival, we had offered to run a workshop giving an overview of HPC, kick-start an interest in STEM, and help cover one of their Curriculum for Excellence outcomes: "I can talk about science stories to develop my understanding of the world around me".

SPRINT v1.0.6 released! OpenMPI and R V3 compatible

EPCC and the Division of Pathway Medicine at the University of Edinburgh have released version 1.0.6 of the SPRINT R software package. This is compatible with R Version 3 and now supports OpenMPI as well as MPICH.

EPCC wins HPC Innovation Excellence Award

Electrostatic potential fluctuations in an annular region at mid-radius in the MAST tokamak, from a gyrokinetic simulation of the saturated turbulence using the GS2 code. A wedge of plasma has been removed from the visualisation so as to view the nature of the fluctuations inside the annulus.EPCC is delighted to be part of a team that has won an HPC Innovation Excellence Award. Presented at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC14) in Leipzig (22-26 June 2014), the awards recognise outstanding application of HPC Computing for Business and Scientific Achievements.
