Applications are open for the Software Sustainability Institute's Fellowship Programme 2018. The Fellowship Programme will support you to talk about software in your research domain to a wider audience, network with others who share a passion for software in research, and learn key skills to benefit you and those you collaborate with.

The programme includes £3000 to use towards travel or conference fees over a 15-month period. You will also be able to interact with other Fellows from 2018 and previous years, thus enabling you to build a network of dynamic people throughout the UK.

Wearing my Software Sustainability Institute hat, I taught at the CODATA-RDA Research Data Science Summer School in Italy last week. With participants from five of the seven continents, sadly Australia and Antartica being under-represented, it was truly a global Summer School.

Data and Software Carpentry combo at Edinburgh

With my Software Sustainability Institute hat on, I recently participated in a back-to-back Data Carpentry and Software Carpentry course sponsored by the University's Research Data Service here at the University of Edinburgh. The courses were held in the main University library in a gorgeous room with a glass wall, providing a rather distracting view of the Meadows parkland. 

Closing the gap: Software Carpentry training for women

Aleksandra Pawlik, former leader of the Software Sustainability Institute’s training activities, shares her thoughts about training aimed at women working in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Closing the gender gap in STEM is a broad topic. Increasing diversity and female participation at all levels of education and professional world in science and technology is a subject of lots of debates. The Software Sustainability Institute has hosted a series of blog posts on Women in Software. Different perspectives from the authors of these posts show that there are many challenges and many ways they could be addressed. 

Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry instructor-training in Edinburgh

On the 4th and 5th May 2016, the Software Sustainability Institute hosted a joint Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry instructor-training course here in Edinburgh.

The workshop was led by Steve Crouch, the Institute’s Research Software Group Leader, and Aleksandra Pawlik, the Institute’s Training Leader. The event was attended by 15 participants from a number of UK research organisations, including one from a Spanish university. These newly trained instructors will soon join the impressive UK instructor pool of almost 70 certified Data Carpentry and Software Carpentry instructors.

Mozilla Science Lab Global Sprint 2016

We will be one of the participating sites at this year's Mozilla Science Lab Global Sprint here in Edinburgh.

The event will take place from 2nd-3rd of June, and will bring together researchers, developers, librarians and the general public from all over the world to hack on open science and open data projects.
