MSc in HPC with Data Science: new scholarship award available for 2017/2018

24 July 2017

A new one-off scholarship award will support a student of EPCC's MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science.

Funding for the one-year programme is being made available to UK and EU nationals from the Registers of Scotland to mark the 400-year anniversary of the Scottish government department’s General Register of Sasines, the world’s oldest national land register. The successful scholarship applicant will have first choice from a range of data science projects offered by Registers of Scotland for their MSc dissertation project.

MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science

Students on our MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science programme learn how to extract knowledge from large, complex and challenging data sets generated across many areas of science and business. The degree equips them with the skills to draw meaning from vast amounts of information by careful management and analysis. Our students are also given a thorough grounding in the high performance computing that underpins the discipline.

EPCC is the major provider of high performance computing training in Europe and we are internationally renowned for our teaching and research. Our Masters students have access to systems such as ARCHER, the UK’s largest, fastest and most powerful supercomputer, and benefit from our staff's expertise across all areas of high performance computing, parallel programming technologies and data science.

About the scholarship

The scholarship award, facilitated by The Data Lab, will cover the full UK/EU fees for the duration of the programme, beginning in September 2017. Additional funding is available for course-related expenses such as travel to conferences and an industry-based dissertation project to be undertaken with Registers of Scotland.

More information on the scholarship and the application process is available at: www.ed.ac.uk/student-funding/postgraduate/uk-eu/science-engineering/physics/registers-of-scotland.

Applicants must have applied for entry to the MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science before submitting their scholarship application.

Deadline for scholarship applications: 23:59 BST, Sunday August 6, 2017.

Industry-based dissertation projects

Every year a number of our MSc students base their final dissertation project on several months' close collaboration with an industry partner, drawing on the expertise of both EPCC supervisors and industry specialists. For example, last year two students were placed with Mallzee and you can read their report here: www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/news/msc-hpc-industrial-placements-mallzee

“EPCC’s partnership with Registers of Scotland reflects the growing importance of data science for society, and the wealth of expertise at the University which will benefit our postgraduate students.” David Henty, MSc Programme Director at EPCC.

“As the lead of the 400th anniversary project, I am delighted RoS will be working in partnership with the University of Edinburgh to sponsor a student undertaking an MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science. Throughout our 400 years we have brought in the technology advances of the time to help us register people’s property rights. How we extract and structure knowledge from the data we gather is a key component of completing the radical digital transformation we are doing at RoS; opportunities such as the sponsorship of relevant degrees like the MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science are vital to ensuring its success.” Isla MacLeod, Head of Customer Experience at Registers of Scotland (RoS).
