3D Cell Pathology

The 3D Cell Pathology project developed technology for quantitative diagnostic pathology and visualisation of cells in 3D.

The aim of the project was to reveal the true shape of cells using 3D images from light microscopy. Better analysis of cell images can improve diagnosis, however, 3D images of cell tissue create huge datasets because the images are high resolution and tissue samples have large dimensions, often up to 10-20 mm. A 3D image can thus be many Gbytes large, which presents storage and transmission problems. EPCC worked on innovative data compression methods to resolve these problems and, in addition, on parallelising the analysis software.
