Edinburgh International Data Facility: Turn your hardest data challenge into a decision, a product, or a publication
The Edinburgh International Data Facility (EIDF) is the data science-enabling infrastructure that helps businesses, universities, and public sector organisations turn complex data into working, real-world outcomes - securely, and at any scale.
From cultural heritage archives preserving historic collections for future generations, to UK Government and NHS partners hosting and analysing sensitive data, and businesses building the next generation of AI products, organisations across every sector use EIDF to meet their hardest data challenges. Whatever your ambition with data, EIDF is built to support it.
Who it’s for
Businesses and SMEs
Take data projects from idea to deployment, with consultancy along the way and GPU/ML capability to compete without the cost of owning the hardware or hiring a big data team.
Public sector and Government
Secure, sovereign hosting and analysis of sensitive and confidential data, on infrastructure already trusted by UK Government and NHS partners.
Researchers and universities
Compute and data infrastructure for publications and grant-led work, plus free long-term storage for your research data -keeping you funder- and journal-compliant.
A flexible set of services
EIDF is built around a “building block” approach. Start with a single analytics-ready dataset or a virtual desktop; add GPU power, shared code, or additional data as your work scales. Add and remove blocks as your needs change - you only pay for what you use.
Businesses, universities and public sector organisations use EIDF to take data-driven research and development from first experiment to working service.
Compute services
EIDF gives you three ways in, all through a web browser: start working without setting up local hardware:
Jump straight into analysis with a virtual desktop you can scale up as the work demands - from everyday exploration to large, memory-heavy models and datasets.
Run and iterate on notebooks with Jupyter, the familiar browser-based workspace for data science and machine learning.
Train and scale AI and heavy analytics on our growing pool of GPU accelerators - including NVIDIA H200, H100 and A100 - plus a Cerebras CS-3 Wafer-Scale Cluster built for AI workloads.
Whether it's your first notebook or a national-scale model, the compute is ready when you are.
Data services
Collaborate without friction. Use GitLab for shared code and documentation so everyone on the project is working from the same place.
Move data on your own terms. Get data in, out, and around EIDF using the transit standards you already use: S3, SFTP, rsync, Globus and MFT.
Store your research data long-term, free of charge. Donate data to the EIDF catalogue and we'll preserve it for future research; with read access controlled by the licence you set.
Customer services
A portal where you can see your projects, users and services at a glance.
A real team on working days - reach a person for help, not a queue number, when you're stuck.
A partner for the whole journey - from setting up the right infrastructure to undertaking analysis, we work alongside you.
Consultancy - bring us a challenge, we'll bring the toolkit
Using the same building-block "EIDF toolkit" our engineers draw on, we'll work alongside you to solve whatever you're facing - data hosting, AI modelling, high-performance analytics, or something entirely new. Tell us the outcome you want, and we'll help you assemble the pieces to reach it.
Where EIDF is making data work
Businesses: GPU and machine-learning development at scale.
Cultural heritage and memory institutions: digitising and preserving historic collections.
UK Government and NHS partners: hosting and analysing sensitive data.
