ARCHER Training report Summer 2019

So, it's been another busy end to the academic year and summer training season for the ARCHER Training team.

Since June we have managed to cram in no less than twelve training courses, in locations from London to Leeds, and Oxford to EPCC here in Edinburgh.

As always, a diverse range of topics were presented, ranging from guides to mastering techniques for Practical Software Development and Hands-on Introduction to HPC, though MPI and Advanced MPI, Advanced OpenMP and Single Node performance Optimisation. To help users get the best from GPUs, now being included on many HPC machines including our own Cirrus, an introduction to GPU Programming with CUDA, not to mention a two-day workshop on the use of a CFD package Turbulence and heat transfer: an Introduction to Code_Saturne.

In all, we welcomed some 200 people to 9 different locations during June and July.

We were particularly pleased to be able to use our own new home in Bayes Centre as the location for our annual ARCHER Summer School this year, where students from around the world came to learn about HPC and MPI, with the opportunity to see the many displays in the Atrium from the many departments now working in the building.

All the course lecture notes, slides and exercise materials are, as always, archived on our Past Courses page so if you are kicking yourself for missing out, you are welcome to have a look and read up about the course online.

Now surrounded by the vibrancy of the Edinburgh Festival, we are gearing up for the start of the next term, with a further three face-to-face courses already open for registration in addition to two scheduled webinars and a complete online course.

Our online offerings don't even require you to leave the comfort of your own swivel chair: a virtual tutorial on OpenMP on GPUs and a webinar report on one of our recent eCSE projects, Enabling distributed kinetic Monte Carlo simulations for catalysis and materials science. Last but not least, we are offering a Shared-memory Programming with OpenMP course, online, over four Wednesday afternoons in November/December, open to anyone, anywhere who would care to join us.
