EPCC and Rock Solid Images to investigate machine learning approaches in rock physics analysis
17 May 2018
Rock Solid Images have announced the start of a collaborative research and development project with EPCC at the University of Edinburgh. The project will be funded by the Oil and Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC), and will investigate novel approaches to petrophysics and rock physics analysis using machine learning approaches, with the goal of improving both the quality and turnaround time of the analysis.
Dr Lucy MacGregor, CTO of RSI, commented: “We are delighted to be working with EPCC, internationally renowned for their expertise in high performance computing and data analytics, on this exciting project, made possible through the support of OGIC. The exploration and production sector of the oil and gas industry is moving rapidly towards real-time access and analysis of all sub-surface information. To remain competitive In this new world, it is essential therefore to improve the quality of our analyses, and provide information and knowledge in time scales measured in minutes or hours, not weeks or months.”
Mark Robertson of OGIC said, “Bringing together leading academic researchers with commercial organisations, to tackle industry challenges, is what OGIC does. We are delighted to be supporting this collaborative project.”
Dr Nick Brown Data Architect, EPCCCurrently rock physics analysis is a manual, time-consuming process and at the current turnaround rate it would take a very considerable time to process all the raw well log data that is available. This project builds on EPCC’s expertise in applying novel technologies to business, and it's an exciting opportunity for us to investigate how machine learning can bring real world, direct benefits to the oil & gas industry.
