EPCC at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

2 June 2026

EPCC and the University of Edinburgh are among a group of leading scientific institutions exhibiting at the prestigious Royal Society Summer Exhibition this year. This annual event brings together world-leading researchers from universities and science institutions across the UK to showcase cutting-edge research to the public.

EPCC's presence is led by Darren White, Laura Moran and myself. Titled 'Supercomputing: the good, the bad and the beautiful', it highlights how supercomputers help address urgent challenges to our health, our security and our planet. The exhibit is timely with the Next National Supercomputer in the pipeline, a system that will provide vastly more supercomputing power than before. We have included a focus on the environmental impact of such systems and how, by minimising their environmental footprint, supercomputers benefit rather than damage our planet.

Hands-on activities

There will be a series of hands-on activities focused around the good, the bad and the beautiful of supercomputing:

  • The What: Based on a traditional circus-style 'hook the duck' challenge, our first activity is key to understanding what a supercomputer is.
  • The Beautiful: A virtual reality museum that will showcase different scientific outputs from supercomputers, highlighting how they address major challenges.
  • The Good and the Bad: A fast, fun, interactive computer game where users simulate their own data centre. The goal is to develop a successful data centre that balances environmental concerns, costs and science benefit.

Free to attend, the event runs from the 30 June–5 July 2026 at the Royal Society in London. It is suitable for all ages and there will be a wide variety of hands-on activities, talks and interactive exhibits. Do come and visit us and the other exhibitors if you can.
