Join ScotRSE's first in-person meeting
27 January 2026
Building a network of Research Software Engineers across Scotland.
Research Software Engineering (RSE) is an interesting and rewarding career, but it can sometimes be a little isolated - especially if you are one of only a few RSEs in your institute. While the Society for Research Software Engineering has done a great job building an engaged community across the UK, local connections can be invaluable to help support your career.
The ScotRSE network is a regional group working to build stronger connections for RSEs across Scotland. A Scotland-focused network helps RSEs collaborate more effectively and address challenges unique to the Scottish research environment.
The ScotRSE community meets monthly online (all are welcome!) and has hosted a wide range of fantastic speakers this year. Talks have been given by PhD students, RSEs, project managers, and research leaders, covering topics from research-focused work (for example, Rachel Samson’s talk explaining how she has used machine learning in climate models) to infrastructure-focused sessions (for example, Magdalena Drafi-McHugh’s introduction to the Edinburgh International Data Facility).
Now for a trip to Dundee!
The first in-person meeting of the regional ScotRSE group will take place on February 23, 2026.
Organised by RSE Group Lead Iain Barrass (University of Glasgow, SSI Fellow) with funding from the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI), lunch will be provided, and a small travel fund is available to support attendees.
The event will include:
- A welcome from David Beavan (SocRSE President)
- A keynote from Neil Chue Hong (SSI) on lessons in community building
- A talk from Nick Brown (CAKE) on knowledge-exchange resources.
The programme is still being finalised, but the meeting aims to:
- Develop the community of RSEs and associated technical professionals in Scotland
- Explore collaboration opportunities across Scottish institutions.
Please register by 3 February.
