Learn new coding skills at the SSI's Research Software Camp: FAIR software

16 June 2023

The Software Sustainability Institute's Research Software Camp will run from 19–30 June. Join in, develop new coding skills, and learn more about FAIR software.

The Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) facilitates the advancement of software in research by cultivating better, more sustainable, research software. Based at the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford and Southampton, the SSI receives funding from all seven research councils.

To help address the lack of software skills in research, the SSI has been running Research Software Camps (RSCs), which provide free online introductory workshops and resources allowing researchers with limited or no experience in software engineering to learn new coding skills and receive personal guidance in a welcoming and supportive environment.

The RSCs are run once a year over the course of two weeks. Each Camp focuses on introducing basic research software skills and good practices as well as offering one-to-one support as part of our Learning to Code mentorship programme.

Research Software Camp 2023

The next Research Software Camp will be held from 19th to 30th June 2023 and will focus on FAIR software. The publication of the FAIR Research Software Principles in 2022 as a parallel effort to the FAIR Data Principles marks the supported vision where valuable scientific outputs are made ‘FAIR’ by becoming more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

The Research Software Camp: FAIR Software will feature a panel discussion on FAIR Software which aims to discuss the state of FAIR Software, its intersections with the FAIR Data principles and what’s coming in the next few years.

In this engaging panel, leading experts from academia and research communities will delve into the critical aspects of FAIR research software. They will discuss the challenges, opportunities, and implications associated with applying FAIR data principles to research software, sharing valuable insights and experiences from their respective domains.

Maria Cruz, Senior Policy Advisor at NWO (Dutch Research Council), will chair this panel.

Joining her in the discussion are:

  • Rena Bakhshi, Programme Manager for the Natural Sciences and Engineering domain at the Netherlands e-Science Centre.
  • Leyla Jael Castro, Team Leader Semantic Technologies at ZB Med.
  • Tom Honeyman, Software Programme Manager, Australian Research Data Commons.
  • Fotis E. Psomopoulos, Researcher at the Centre of Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH).

Find out more about our panellists in their introductory videos on the SSI YouTube channel.

Whether you are a researcher, developer, research software engineer, or simply interested in the future of research software, this panel discussion offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights, engage in a lively discussion, submit your own questions, and overall broaden your understanding of the FAIR software principles and their impact on the research ecosystem.
