Machine learning collaboration nominated for Scottish Knowledge Exchange Award

EPCC and RIGOCAL Engineering of Aberdeen have been jointly nominated for a Scottish Knowledge Exchange Award for Innovation of the Year.

RIGOCAL offers a range of civil engineering and environmental services, including marine mammal observation. We worked together on the research and experimental development of machine learning algorithms for the identification of marine mammal species from RGB and Infrared video images. The result will be an automated marine mammal detection and protection service which combines machine learning with Infrared and High-Definition cameras for use in offshore energy and construction industries.

“This was a technically challenging but satisfying project in which we worked closely with RIGOCAL to apply existing deep learning models to a new area. Our collaboration has produced a more efficient service for RIGOCAL’s customers and we hope it will contribute to the conservation of marine mammals." Terry Sloan, EPCC project manager
