TeamEPCC takes overall first place in the Student Cluster Competition at ISC23

TeamEPCC victorious in Student Cluster Competition at ISC23

The ISC23 Student Cluster Competition brought together 22 teams from across the world, both virtually and in person.

TeamEPCC was one of seven to compete in the conference hall, with another 15 teams competing virtually. Each had three days to demonstrate its abilities in obtaining the best performance from its computing cluster across a series of benchmarks and applications. Each team designed its own cluster, with EPCC's created with the support of sponsor Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), and the EPCC systems team.

TeamEPCC performed outstandingly and was the outright winner across the competition. The team comprised five students from our MSc programmes in High Performance Computing (HPC) and HPC with Data Science, and a third year undergraduate student intern from Edinburgh Napier Unviersity's Networking and Cybersecurity programme:

  • Hristo Belchev,
  • Ikraduya Edian
  • Jaffery Irudayasamy
  • Kris Tanev
  • Oleksandr Piekhota
  • Tomas Rubio Cruz

We thank our sponsor, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), and the EPCC systems team for their support. TeamEPCC have provided us with some initial reaction to their success, which you can read about via the EPCC blog. We hope to share further reaction to TeamEPCC's upon their triumphant return to Edinburgh, but you can keep up to date with their progress via Twitter and you can read more about how they prepared for the competition via this blog article.

Congratulations to Team EPCC for their great success at ISC23! Overall first prize is a great challenge for any team and the EPCC teams also have a very short period of time in which to prepare. It’s a true testament to the team members’ dedication and that of the great people at EPCC’s MSc programmes who are always very supportive and knowledgeable.
