Testing industry workflows on HPC services

10 August 2023

SHAPE (SME HPC Adoption Programme in Europe) enabled smaller companies to test workflows on HPC hardware in a low risk environment by giving them access to hardware and expertise within the EU PRACE programme.

Large-scale HPC facilities are widely used within academia but this is much less true for industry. Even trying out relatively small simulations on HPC hardware can be time-consuming and risky, especially for smaller businesses (eg SMEs) who may have no prior experience with HPC software or hardware.

The SHAPE programme ran for around nine years and supported 79 projects, with the final projects completing in mid-2022. Although the programme formally ended last year, we have still been collecting and reviewing White Papers from projects that finished towards the end of the programme.

Over the last few months we have reviewed Papers covering a variety of commercial applications including:

  • Predicting electricity production using AI.
  • Using computational fluid dynamics simulations to find optimal configurations of twin-propeller propulsion in shallow river traffic.
  • The development of thrusters used in space transportation.
  • Modelling of hypersonic flows, which are used in the generation of aerodynamic databases.
  • Studies of metabolic biomarker used in diagnostics for diseases such as endometriosis or chronic kidney disease.
  • Development of a computational workflow for calculating the vaporisation enthalpies of pure compounds.

The last of these was worked on by the EPCC team and a White Paper is available at:

The White Papers all describe the work done under SHAPE and how HPC was employed. The full collection can be found at: https://prace-ri.eu/training-support/technical-documentation/white-papers/shape-white-papers
