EPCC provides world-class Supercomputing and data facilities and services for science and business.

Our vision

EPCC aims to accelerate the effective exploitation of novel computing throughout industry, academia and commerce. 

This has been our mission for over 30 years as we strive to be the UK’s premier Supercomputing centre, renowned internationally for innovation and leading-edge research.

Our work is guided by key goals and objectives that support this mission and place EPCC at the heart of the Exascale era.

Delivering world-class services

We will continue to deliver world-class High Performance Computing (HPC) and data services to benefit our users and partners. As well as supporting businesses with our advanced computing facilities and capabilities.

Leading data-driven innovation 

We are a pivotal element in the success of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal and its Data-Driven Innovation initiative.

Collaborating globally

We will continue to build and maintain collaborations and strong relationships with key organisations worldwide, undertaking globally-important computing research.

Promoting teaching excellence

We endeavour to maintain our position as a major provider of HPC training in Europe.

Our staff

EPCC is nothing without our people. After all, computers do not operate themselves. We have over 130 full-time staff. 

Health & well-being

We believe a healthy work/life balance is important for all of our staff. The University of Edinburgh was an early adopter of family-friendly policies and we support hybrid working at EPCC.

Diversity & inclusion

We know we can only succeed when we attract and retain the best talent, which is why we are committed to diversity and inclusion.

Our female-to-male gender balance is roughly 30:70—excellent for the IT domain, but we recognise more can and will be done to achieve parity.

We are a founding member of the Women in HPC network, which works to improve the representation of women in the HPC community. We are also one of six Women in HPC Chapters, with a strong focus on outreach activities aimed at encouraging young women to consider a career in computational science and HPC.

Beyond gender, we are increasing our efforts in other areas of diversity. For example, the Diversity in HPC project showcases and celebrates the diversity of talent across the HPC community.

EPCC promotes and facilitates the conduct of ethical, responsible research in line with the University of Edinburgh’s commitment to research integrity

All of our research work adheres to the University of Edinburgh’s College of Science and Engineering research ethics framework, which adopts and embeds the UK Research Integrity Office's Code of Practice for Research and the Concordat to Support Research Integrity.

Sustainability

We are committed to sustainability in all our activities and uphold the University of Edinburgh’s procurement policies related to fair working conditions and sustainability. This requires our suppliers to demonstrate this commitment too throughout their supply chain.

We have invested in innovative approaches to energy management for our Advanced Computing Facility (ACF), minimising energy usage since its refurbishment in 2004. Green tariff electricity is used at the ACF—and across the whole University.

Our community

At EPCC, we work hard to foster strong ties with the local community. We run an active outreach programme and we regularly participate in science festivals. We offer work experience placements for senior school pupils and intern opportunities for students.
