I have been working on parallel computing for more than 25 years and joined EPCC in 1993. I became EPCC's Technical Director in 2001 and now  manage a group with more than 50 technical staff, which is responsible  for technology transfer, training, European projects and research support.

Alan Simpson

At EPCC, I have taken leadership roles in a number of national HPC Services: applications support team leader for the T3D/T3E service; HPCx Project Director; and HECToR User Support and Liaison team leader. For the ARCHER Service, I am the CSE (Computational Science and Engineering) Director as well as team leader for User Support and Liaison.

I have been active in EPCC's MSc in HPC since it began in 2000 and currently coordinate a module on Parallel Programming Languages. Since 2008, I have been a work package leader in PRACE which is developing a  pan-European Research Infrastructure for HPC; my work package focuses on the enabling of applications on major systems across Europe.

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a BSc (1st class honours) in Mathematical Physics and, in 1991, completed my PhD in Computational Physics as one of the founding members of UKQCD, one of the UK's initial Grand Challenge projects.
