My current work at EPCC is centred on helping some of the Ph.D. students of Prof. Prashant Valluri in Mechanical Engineering to:


1) increase the capability of TPLS to meet its research needs and
2) assist them in successfully completing their degrees.

 

TPLS is a direct numerical solver for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations applied to two phases. It has been used to simulate (amongst other things) channel flow (including counter-current flow), the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, evaporation of sessile droplets and the growth of bubbles in boiling. To model the interface between the phases, it uses the Diffuse Interface method.

Profile

Having gained a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Imperial College in 1979, I worked as a post-doc in Cambridge, Saclay (France) and Edinburgh for the next 5 years. I then worked for GEC/Marconi/BAE for 21 years on parallel processing and simulation-based training. Finally, I joined EPCC.

I have worked on many different projects over the years. I have sought to apply my knowledge of physics when possible.

My greatest and most sustained contribution has been to TPLS, which I have worked on, on and off, since 2013.

I worked for EPCC for 17 years before retiring in 2023. After a break of over a year, I returned to work part-time for a fixed term as a named researcher on an EPSRC project.

Outside work, my main interests are the highland bagpipe and the saxophone.
