Dr Michael Bareford

HPC Software Architect

My work concerns the efficient utilisation of HPC platforms for scientific research.

This typically involves solving the problems that arise when scientists run their parallel codes on the ARCHER2 and Cirrus machines.

Working at EPCC also gives me the opportunity to tackle longer term challenges, such as how to integrate AI techniques with established HPC-based workflows and how best to make use of accelerator devices to minimise time to solution.

Michael Bareford

My background is in theoretical solar physics: I did my PhD at Manchester followed by a PostDoc at St Andrews, working on magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the solar corona, the outer atmosphere of the Sun.

Outside of work, I enjoy running and have competed in hill races and long-distance events such as the Cape Wrath Marathon and the Pentland Skyline.
