Our new collaboration with Andes Technology, a leading supplier of RISC-V CPU cores, will enable the exploration of HPC workloads and tools on latest generation RISC-V CPUs.

We are pleased to announce that we have joined the Andes Technology Corporation’s university programme. EPCC, as one of the world’s leading supercomputing centres, is at the forefront of high performance computing (HPC), and one of our key research activities is to explore and demonstrate novel technologies that could form part of future supercomputers.

This collaboration with Andes Technology, a leading supplier of RISC-V CPU cores, will enable the exploration of HPC workloads and tools on latest generation RISC-V CPUs. EPCC hosts a RISC-V testbed as part of the ExCALIBUR Hardware and Enabling Software (H&ES) programme. ExCALIBUR is one of the UK’s key exascale software projects, and this testbed enables HPC and scientific software developers to experiment with RISC-V for their workloads to allow applications to become RISC-V ready with a view to growing the software ecosystem around RISC-V in HPC.

United through the objective of bringing RISC-V to HPC, this partnership will enable us to expose HPC and scientific software developers to high performance CPU cores from Andes Technology. Being able to experiment with their applications on such state-of-the-art RISC-V technology will not only help us to further understand what codebases currently work well with RISC-V, but also identify where the challenges lie to then assist in the development of solutions to address them.
