Identifying factors that can predict men’s response to radiotherapy

23 February 2023

Prostate Cancer UK has funded research into the use of advanced computing techniques to analyse data from more than 10,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated with radiotherapy.

A team from the University of Edinburgh, led by Professors Bill Nailon and Duncan McLaren (School of Engineering/Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre/Institute of Genetics & Cancer) has secured a £420k grant, over three years, from Prostate Cancer UK to advance the state of the art in personalised radiotherapy for prostate cancer patients. The project will develop a solution for the integration of population-based clinical data into the prostate radiotherapy workflow to help improve treatment, and minimise the damage to healthy tissue.

The multidisciplinary team includes University investigators and staff from the School of Engineering (Oncology Physics and the Institute for Digital Communications), the Usher Institute, and EPCC, as well as collaborators from NHS Lothian, NHS Grampian, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Highland, and the University of Glasgow.

EPCC, represented by myself as Project Co-Investigator, will contribute the technical solution to curate and manage the project data in a safe and accessible way, building on EPCC’s experience with the Edinburgh International Data Facility and EPCC’s model for Safe Havens.
