Prof. Mark Parsons joined EPCC, the supercomputing centre at The University of Edinburgh, in 1994 as a software developer working on several industrial contracts following a PhD in Particle Physics undertaken on the LEP accelerator at CERN in Geneva.
Our team

Zoë joined EPCC in September 2024 as Systems Programme Manager, helping the team deliver and operate the world-class IT infrastructure and systems on which our users across the research community depend. She came to EPCC with extensive programme and project management experience across the public and private sectors, most recently at NatWest where among other roles she helped lead the agile transformation for the bank’s debit card platform, and is passionate about creating delivery environments that enable teams to succeed.
After graduating from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, with a BEng degree in Computing and Electronics, I joined EPCC as an applications consultant in April 2002.

I joined EPCC in December 2013 as Project Officer of the Software Sustainability Institute, where I support Community and Training activities, as well as some of the Directorate’s tasks.

I joined EPCC, the supercomputing centre at the University of Edinburgh, in 2023 as part of the Systems team based at ACF. With a solid background in systems administration, my role involves supporting, deploying, and implementing changes across HPC services, as well as some EIDF services.
I joined EPCC in April, 1997. Currently, I am involved with the following project:

My background is in atmospheric science first as a researcher, and then as a research software engineer (RSE) where I provided technical and scientific support to users of Earth System models. Through this, I became interested in management of research, and in 2020 I joined the SSI as a project manager. I am still an active member of the RSE community, and I am a trustee for the Society for Research Software Engineers.
I joined EPCC in March 2019 after graduating from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, with a
BSc Hons in Software Development, and then working for a year with an AI startup.
I joined EPCC after completing a PhD in theoretical and computational statistical mechanics at the University of Edinburgh.

I joined the EPCC in June 2022 after spending two years as a DiRAC RSE in the Physics department at the University of Edinburgh supporting Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics research and the deployment of the Tursa HPC system. Before my move to Edinburgh, I completed a PhD in Lattice QCD at the University of Southampton.

I hold a BSc and MSc in Computational Mathematics and Computer Science. Since 2021, I have been pursuing my PhD at EPCC, focusing on AI-driven approaches to support metacognition through computer vision models and intelligent interventions. In 2025, I joined the UKRI’s MetaScience project with Dr. Rosa Filgueira at EPCC, which aims to track and evaluate innovative research ideas across the UK.

Mark Sawyer is a Programme Manager at EPCC.
Service Manager for: ADR Scotland linkage service, SPACe analytic workbench

I have been working on parallel computing for some 35 years, and joined EPCC in 1993. I am currently the Service Director for the UK’s national HPC facility, ARCHER2. In this role, I am responsible for ensuring that ARCHER2 delivers a high-quality service to all users.

As Commercial Manager for EPCC, my role is to raise awareness of the excellent work that we do and to make sure that our clients and collaborators are satisfied with the consultancy and computational services we provide. Occasionally, I act as a project manager (especially for shorter-term industry projects). This helps me to keep my technical knowledge up-to-date which, in turn, ensures that I can provide expert advice to companies considering working with us.
I joined EPCC in 2019 as an Application Developer, and have been working as part of our Commercial Group since 2022.
